Land gate in Weilburg

Weilburg  lies between the foothills of Westerwald and Taunus. The Lahn is the natural dividing line between these two mountain foothills. It flows around the core city in the form of a loop. The castle and the castle garden  are not only worth a visit in summer. I must

confess, however, that I also visited the castle only twice. Under the altar of the castle church is a royal tomb. Here rulers and family members of the Nassau princely house are buried. But also the home and mining museum or the Rosenhangmuseum are worth a visit. Worth seeing is the model building park in Weilburg. However, it would go beyond the scope of this overview and so I refer to the official Weilburg site on the Internet. Of course you can also be active in sports in Weilburg. In addition to hiking or Nordic walking, of course, also water hiking, rafting and shipping, fishing and horse riding in question. Some swimming pools in the area and an indoor pool in Weilburg also offer water sports. For the inhabitants, who make other demands on culture, can be helped. Weilburg hosts the Weilburg Palace Concerts every summer. There is also culture in the Lindencult in Wlbg.-Hasselbach. Weilburg is only about 60 km (37miles) away from the Rhine-Main area. So if you want to get a taste of the city, you can just go to Frankfurt or the surrounding area. Also by train you can take a Intercity train from Limburg to Frankfurt or Cologne. The lions gradually populated the city Weilburg. As the lion is not only to be found in the coat of arms of Weilburg but also the heraldic animal of the state of Hesse, the lion will also be found elsewhere in Hesse. The lion was designed by the Weilburger artist Dieter Boger and next to the Hessentag 2005 also for the 1100 year anniversary (first mention of Weilburg was 906). The Weilburg castle  garden was redesigned and extended in 1700 by Francois Lemaire, who was specially brought from Saarbrücken. Even today, the castle garden with its orangeries and gardens offers a beautiful place to relax on the French model. We have dared a small photo safari through the park and provided as a picture gallery for you.

The mining and town museum in Weilburg emerged from the local history museum founded in 1911.

The exhibits were presented to the public for the first time in 1914 at Marktplatz 7. Due to the lack of space, the collected works moved to various rooms, including the old town hall, the castle and the old elementary school. Since 1949, the museum has been located in the former princely Nassau-Weilburg government building at Schlossplatz 1. It can still be found here today. On September 18, 1972, the local history museum was expanded to include a mining museum. At that time it was the first mining museum in Hesse. The Mining Museum also received a show tunnel, which was expanded in 1975 to include a deep tunnel. A virtual tour can only show a small impression of the extraordinary exhibition. A visit is definitely worthwhile for those interested in mining. In addition, not too far away (9,4 mi / 15.2 km as the crow flies, 14,3 mi / 23.4 km by road) is the Grube Fortuna visitor mine. former brewery building of the Helbig brewery. It was opened in June 2017 and shows contemporary art on 3000m². Changing exhibits by contemporary artists are presented in special exhibitions. The museum has been awarding the “Lion of Weilburg” art prize since 2021 and also offers a support program for young artists. Works of art by numerous well-known artists can be seen in the permanent exhibition. The focus is on art created in Germany. The regularly shown special exhibitions are accompanied by readings, concerts, theater performances and dance events.
